The focus is on a variety of processes and methodologies in this class. Students work in two-dimensional format to create grounds from various materials on which to draw and paint, and create pieces exploring aspects of collage and assemblage such as shape, texture, edge, surface and chance. Through mixed-media techniques, found objects are transformed into striking visual metaphors. The elements of design are emphasized throughout to enable students to improve composition.

Intro to Technical Design teaches the basics of lighting, sound, and video design for theater. The class will briefly review the practical fundamentals of controlling lights, speakers, microphones, projectors, etc, but will mostly focus on the creative elements of design and their practical applications for use in plays, musicals, dance shows, etc. Final projects will integrate with Mainstage Productions throughout the year. Having taken Intro to Tech or Lighting 1 will help but is not required.

Painting Technique

This course provides the student with an introduction to painting technique using ink, watercolor and acrylic. Students begin by exploring wet surface, dry-brush and brush dynamics with ink and then progress into understanding basic color theory and color mixing with watercolor, using both 'on the page' and 'off the page' techniques.
